Review

Well what can I say but wow. Holly Black's writing style is so beautiful. I adore the way she has with words. This novella was a great bridging gap between The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King. Would highly recommend this series to anyone.

Review

A beautiful but haunting tale that we capture you. This was a stunning debut novel. It started off slow for me but it soon kicked off and the ride was non stop from there. The magical elements in this book are in the background and you focus more on the gothic / Victorian setting of old Boston and just beyond. If you love Jane Eyre or any dark historical romance give this book a go.

Darksoul (Godblind #2) by Anna Stephens

Darksoul (Godblind #2) - 4 Stars

Synopsis

The thrilling sequel to GODBLIND, the biggest fantasy debut of 2017.
The Wolves lie dead beside Rilpor’s soldiers, slaughtered at the hands of the Mireces and their fanatical army.
The veil that once kept the Red Gods at bay has been left in tatters as the Dark Lady’s plans for the world come to fruition. Where the gods walk, blood is spilled on the earth.
All that stands between the Mireces army and complete control of the Kingdom of Rilpor are the walls of its capital, Rilporin, and those besieged inside.
But hope might yet bloom in the unlikeliest of places: in the heart of a former slave, in the mind of a soldier with the eyes of a fox, and in the hands of a general destined to be king.

Review

I received with thanks an ARC copy of Darksoul from Harper Collins UK and Netgalley.

This is my true and honest review of Darksoul (Godblind #2). This was published on 23rd August 2018

This is the brutal conclusion to the Darksoul. Like the other one this one is equally if not more brutal than the 1st one. This left off where the other one finished off. This story is beautiful and beautiful all at the same time. The author does not mind playing with the readers emotions and happy ever after is not present for all concerned.

Would recommend if you love a good grimdark YA fantasy.

City of Ghosts (Cassidy Blake #1) by Victoria Schwab

City of Ghosts - 4 Stars

Synopsis

Cassidy Blake's parents are The Inspectres, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.

When The Inspectres head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cassidy's powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.

Review

This was cute, really enjoyed reading about Cassidy and Jacob. Loved the ghost hunting through Scotland. Also there are a lot of Harry Potter references, which is cool.

SPOOKATHON TBR

This a week long readathon hosted by Lala from Booksandlala. Spookathon Announcement Video

My TBR

Challenge 1 - read a thriller - The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides—especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Challenge 2- read a book with purple on the cover - Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Askaban by J.K. Rowling

Challenge 3 - read a book not set in the current time period - The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli

In the beginning, there was the Namsara: the child of sky and spirit, who carried love and laughter wherever he went. But where there is light, there must be darkness—and so there was also the Iskari. The child of blood and moonlight. The destroyer. The death-bringer.

These are the legends that Asha, daughter of the king of Firgaard, has grown up learning in hushed whispers, drawn to the forbidden figures of the past. But it isn’t until she becomes the fiercest, most feared dragon slayer in the land that she takes on the role of the next Iskari—a lonely destiny that leaves her feeling more like a weapon than a girl.

Asha conquers each dragon and brings its head to the king, but no kill can free her from the shackles that await at home: her betrothal to the cruel commandant, a man who holds the truth about her nature in his palm. When she’s offered the chance to gain her freedom in exchange for the life of the most powerful dragon in Firgaard, she finds that there may be more truth to the ancient stories than she ever could have expected. With the help of a secret friend—a slave boy from her betrothed’s household—Asha must shed the layers of her Iskari bondage and open her heart to love, light, and a truth that has been kept from her.

The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins - 4.5 Stars

Synopsis
Welcome to the Adventure Zone!

SEE! The illustrated exploits of three lovable dummies set loose in a classic fantasy adventure!

READ! Their journey from small-time bodyguards to world-class artifact hunters!

MARVEL! At the sheer metafictional chutzpah of a graphic novel based on a story created in a podcast where three dudes and their dad play a tabletop role playing game in real time!

Join Taako the elf wizard, Merle the dwarf cleric, and Magnus the human warrior for an adventure they are poorly equipped to handle AT BEST, guided ("guided") by their snarky DM, in a graphic novel that, like the smash-hit podcast it's based on, will tickle your funny bone, tug your heartstrings, and probably pants you if you give it half a chance.

With endearingly off-kilter storytelling from master goofballs Clint McElroy and the McElroy brothers, and vivid, adorable art by Carey Pietsch, The Adventure Zone: Here There be Gerblins is the comics equivalent of role-playing in your friend's basement at 2am, eating Cheetos and laughing your ass off as she rolls critical failure after critical failure.

This was okay I guess. The story was fine but I am not a fan of the art style. Gave this a go as wanted to read before the Netflix show comes out. Will watch the show but won’t carry on with the graphic novel.
